Blaming "differences of opinion with Nintendo with regard to future software development, distribution, etc." as the main reason, Square will instead focus on developing titles for Sony's PlayStation, and quite possibly the PC market as well. According to Square, several software titles are planned for release on the PlayStation in 1996, most notably Final Fantasy VII, due around Christmas-time in Japan. "In order to insure consistently high-volume sales per title, we have built an extremely close relationship with Nintendo, and concentrated on creating mega-hits by beefing up our development and other staff accordingly. However, the installed bases of new 32-bit next generation hardware continue to rise, and the nature of the industry has changed." With Square's recent business partnership with Nintendo (and Just System) back in September, and with the upcoming jointly-developed Super Famicom title, "Super Mario RPG" about to be released, one can only assume that there is more to this story than what readily meets the eye. Stay tuned to IG for further updates on this intriguing story."
