“Square revises its Nintendo-only strategy: “Square is changing its strategy of providing software only for Nintendo. In addition to supplying Sony with original software starting this year, we are considering developing software for the PC market as well. We plan to supply several software titles in 1996 for the Playstation. Among them, the most notable release will be Final Fantasy VII, which should be out (in Japan) by Christmas of ‘96. “Moreover, it appears unlikely that Square will develop games for the Nintendo 64. In order to insure consistently high-volume sales per title, we have built an extremely close relationship with Nintendo, and concentrated on creating mega-hits by beefing up our development and other staff accordingly. However, the installed bases of new 32-bit next generation hardware (such as Sony’s Playstation and Sega’s Saturn) continue to rise, and the nature of the industry has changed. “The reason for Square’s strategic change at this time can be attributed to differences of opinion with Nintendo with regard to future software development, distribution, etc.” Basically, with Nintendo’s delay of the Nintendo 64, it sets our business back some. With the rise of the new next-generation systems, we feel we can make more money by supplying software to them, instead. I’ll keep you posted as game titles become available, and I’ll also let you know as soon as I do what impact this has on Square of America’s development and translations.
